Dr. Anil K Suresh who is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences, along with his team from SRM University-AP just recently developed a see-through and transparent (with transmittance above 85%) bio-template.

They have managed to derive this from the fish scale wastes, as to be able to substitute the extensive usage of the disposable plastic cuvettes, for the UV-Visible Spectroscopy measurements in the spectrum of 350-900 nm.

A cuvette is a piece of laboratory equipment that is supposed to hold samples for the spectroscopic analysis. Cuvettes are usually made out of glass, plastic, or optical-grade quartz. Plastic cuvettes have the advantage of being less expensive and disposable and are often used in fast spectroscopic assays.

The UV-Vis spectroscopy is a versatile analytical tool which is used, to examine the nature of the various synthetic, biological and clinical molecules for pharmaceutical and environmental applications.

The team members demonstrated the practical on bio-template analysis of diverse analytes namely the DNA, proteins, nanoparticles, bacteria, organic dyes, BSA assay and dye-degradations.

Dr. Anil said, the large-scale development of the bio-template can resolve many issues in performing sustainable research. For instance, creating huge demand for fish scales as a resource stratagem which otherwise lets out a foul smell and disease propagation when it is discarded.

Secondly, using the non-biodegradable plastic cuvettes could be minimised for routine analytics and third, unlike plastic cuvettes that demand 500-fold analyte, the bio-film allows the analysis at 10 micro litre volumes.

Dr. Anil K Suresh does own the entire copyrights for his invention.

The Royal Society of Chemistry has accepted his work for publication in the respected journal called “Green Chemistry.”

Dr. Anil emphasised that the biodegradable transparent bio-template huge potential in the routine scientific and pharma UV-Vis analytics. He is, to very soon bring this product to the scientific community as a sustainable science solution.

Dr. Anil said that this breakthrough conception would not have been possible without the rigorous efforts of his team and the continuous support from university management, who are also encouraging and willing to support him to establish his own start-up within the University.

He thanks his group members Ms. Divya Parimi, Mr. Chandra Bhatt, Mr. Tharun Bollu and Ms. Madhura, his collaborators Dr Malli and Mr Jacob. Dr Anil’s team especially thanked the management of SRM University-AP; the President Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan for his support.

This was about the amazing development that Dr. Anil K Suresh, the Associate Professor, has made in the science field in order to preserve the environment. Replacing fish scale wastes instead of plastic is will help the ecosystem and will surely make a difference in it. Dr. Suresh definitely deserves a laud for his amazing invention which is set to save the environment.
