Ten Maharashtra cities are now on a world map that most of us only scroll past on Instagram. The Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026 ranks 1,000 cities on economics, human capital, quality of life, environment and governance. Mumbai is 330. Pune is 427. Then come Nashik 614, Nagpur 615, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar 646, Solapur 675, Vasai-Virar 699, Kolhapur 715, Amravati 740 and Sangli 920.
That list is not a flex for politicians. It is a signal for anyone 18 to 28 still deciding where to study, intern, start up or stay. The same report that puts New York and London on top also says Indian cities will drive a big share of future growth. Maharashtra already has ten names in the room. The post from The Maharashtra Index said it plainly: a lot more can be done. For Gen Z, that “more” is the actual job.
Do not treat this as Mumbai-or-nothing. The state is pushing work, capital and training outward. The GCC Policy 2025 wants about 400 new global capability centres and four lakh high-skill roles, with Nashik, Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar named as the next frontier after Mumbai and Pune. If you code, analyse data, handle cybersecurity, design products or manage operations, those cities are no longer Plan B. They are cheaper bases with rising demand.
Mumbai and Vasai-Virar. Mumbai remains the finance, media, logistics and headquarters city. Use it for capital markets, fintech, film-tech, ports and global firms. Vasai-Virar, ranked 699, is the overflow city getting Metro 13 and a heavier civic budget for roads, hospitals and water. If rent in Andheri wrecks your savings, this belt is where support jobs, content work, retail tech and construction services will keep multiplying.
Pune. Rank 427 is not an accident. It is India’s GCC story in fast-forward: IT parks, campuses, auto-electronics and research. Hinjewadi is still messy on roads, but the corridor is being widened and Pune is being sold as the natural GCC hub. Learn AI, semiconductors, EV software or product management here. Do not just hunt Hinjewadi campus drives. Track GCC openings in Kharadi and Baner, and use college incubation cells before you graduate.
Nagpur and Amravati. Nagpur at 615 sits on MIHAN, metro, an airport and a logistics spine. Defence and electronics corridors are being drawn through Vidarbha. Amravati at 740 is quieter today, but textile parks and manufacturing clusters are the bet. If you want operations, aviation support, warehousing tech, industrial design or agri-processing, east Maharashtra is cheaper to live in and hungrier for talent.
Nashik and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Nashik is pairing wine, auto, electronics and a giant infrastructure push around Simhastha. Sambhajinagar has AURIC, the greenfield industrial city on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, with autos, EVs, pharma and engineering plots already allotted. These are cities for people who can work factory-floor tech, quality control, supply chain, tourism ops and industrial startups, not only app jobs.
Solapur, Kolhapur, Sangli. Do not laugh at 675, 715 and 920. Textiles, foundries, sugar, food processing, leather and campus towns still employ more people than a viral startup. The opportunity is to modernise them: digital sales for Kolhapur products, food-tech in Sangli, process automation in Solapur mills. Global rankings rise when second-rung cities stop exporting only raw goods and start exporting brands and skills.
The government door is unusually open if you use it. The Maharashtra Startup, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Policy 2025 has a Rs 500-crore Chief Minister Maha-Fund track, subsidised loans in the Rs 5-10 lakh range, incubators and a planned Innovation City near Navi Mumbai airport. MATRIX is meant to thicken deep-tech incubation. ITIs and the CM youth training stream are adding EV, drone, AI, solar and semiconductor modules. Language centres for overseas jobs have started in Mumbai and are supposed to spread. Register on MSInS and DVET portals. Treat them like applications, not posters.
How to actually benefit: pick one city thesis, not ten. Build a skill the index rewards, especially human capital and economics: coding plus domain, design plus manufacturing, languages plus trade. Use internships in Tier-2 before you burn savings in Bandra. If you start up, solve a local problem the ranking exposes: water, heat, transit, waste, skilling, farm logistics. Those gaps are why the post said more can be done.
A global index will not pay your rent. A state that wants a trillion-dollar economy, 400 GCCs and district incubators just might, if you show up with a skill and a city plan. Maharashtra’s names are already on the list. The next move is yours.
