The kind where you are exhausted and still ask her how her day went. Nobody really prepares boys for this part of love. We grow up thinking love is loud grand gestures big declarations movie moments. Nobody tells you love is actually mostly boring. Its choosing the same person on a random Tuesday when nothing is going right. I have been in a relationship that has had its fair share of bad days
Days where we barely spoke
Days where every conversation turned into an argument about nothing and everything at the same time
Days where I genuinely wondered if we were too tired to keep going
And through all of that the one thing I learned is that trying is not a feeling. Trying is a decision you make again and again. Some days I dont feel like being patient. Some days I want to just shut down and stop explaining myself. But I have realised that giving up mid conflict doesnt make you strong it just makes the distance permanent.
Being a twenty three year old guy in a relationship right now feels different from what our fathers experienced. We are the generation raised on therapy speak and attachment styles and red flags. We know the vocabulary of love more than any generation before us. But knowing the words doesnt automatically make us good at doing the work. I think thats the real struggle for guys my age. We can diagnose a problem in a relationship in two sentences. We can tell you exactly what avoidant attachment looks like. But applying that emotional intelligence in the actual heat of a fight is a completely different skill. Trying hard doesnt mean staying silent and taking everything. It doesnt mean losing yourself to keep someone else happy. I used to think trying meant being endlessly agreeable. Now I know trying means showing up honestly even when honesty is uncomfortable
It means saying I am hurt instead of going quiet
It means saying I am scared of losing this instead of pretending I dont care
There have been nights where I almost walked away. Not because I stopped loving her but because loving someone through chaos is genuinely hard. And in those nights what kept me there wasnt some grand romantic reason. It was the simple thought that people worth keeping are rarely easy to keep. Anything valuable in life takes effort
Why would love be any different. I also think a lot about what trying looks like from a mans side specifically. Society still tells boys to be the strong ones the fixers the ones who dont cry or panic. So when a relationship gets messy a lot of guys either shut down completely or overcompensate by controlling everything
I have done both at different points and neither worked. What actually worked was learning to sit in discomfort without running from it
Learning that I dont have to fix every emotion instantly. Sometimes trying just means staying in the room even when things feel unresolved
I wont pretend this journey has been clean or perfect
There were moments I said the wrong things. Moments I let my ego speak louder than my love. But every single time I chose to come back and repair things instead of walking away out of pride. That repair is where real growth happens
Not in the grand gestures but in the quiet decision to fix what you broke. If I had to tell a younger version of myself something about love it would be this. Trying hard doesnt guarantee a happy ending. Some relationships dont work out no matter how much effort you put in. But trying hard does guarantee that you become someone capable of real intimacy. Someone who doesnt run at the first sign of difficulty. Someone who understands that love isnt about avoiding pain but about choosing someone through it. At twenty three I am still learning what commitment actually means beyond the idea of it. I am learning that loyalty isnt just about not cheating
Its about staying present when everything in you wants to disappear. It's about choosing connection over comfort again and again. And maybe thats the most honest thing I can say about being a young man trying to love well in a world that constantly tells us to give up the moment things get hard
I am trying
Not because it's easy
But because some things and some people are worth the fight
