 Love That Costs Something

Selfless love isn't loud. It doesn't announce itself. It shows up in the small unglamorous moments nobody claps for.

I'm twenty three. Most guys my age are chasing promotions or planning weekend trips or figuring out how to impress someone on a first date. I love in a different rhythm. Some of my days are shaped around someone else's needs before my own get a say. And somewhere in that I learned something about love that no movie ever taught me.

Selfless love isn't the version we see on screen. It isn't a grand gesture or a dramatic sacrifice made once and then forgotten. It's showing up again on a Tuesday when nobody is watching. It's choosing patience when you're already tired. It's staying present even when your own plans quietly dissolve in the background.

I used to think love was mostly about feeling something intense. Butterflies. Excitement. That electric pull toward another person. Now I think the truer test of love is what you do when none of that excitement is present. When it's just duty and tenderness standing in for passion. When love looks more like consistency than spark.

There's a kind of maturity that comes from loving someone in a way that asks something of you. It strips away the performance. You stop loving for what you get back and start loving because the person matters more than your comfort does. That shift changes you. It makes you softer in some places and stronger in others.

I won't pretend it's easy. Some days the weight of it presses down harder than I expect. Some days I miss the version of my life where my time was fully mine. But even on those days I've noticed something. The love doesn't disappear just because the ease does. If anything it becomes more real. More rooted. Less about how I feel in the moment and more about who I choose to be.

Selfless love teaches you that care isn't measured in convenience. It's measured in the moments you show up anyway. As a young guy still figuring out who I am I think this is one of the truest lessons I've been handed early. Love isn't only the version that feels good. Sometimes it's the version that costs you something and asks you to give it anyway.

That's the kind of love I'm learning to carry. Quiet. Steady. Unseen by most people but felt by the one who needs it most.
