Stranger Meetup Pages And Why I Stopped Being So Careless About Them

I've lost count of how many meetup pages exist for Pune now. Ride groups trek groups late night chai groups random bonfire plans some guy posting come meet strangers and vibe with zero other details. I've joined a bunch of these over the years mostly because Pune has this thing where everyone's either new to the city or just craving company that isn't their college group chat. And most of the time it's genuinely fun. You show up somewhere you didn't expect to be talking to five people you'll probably never see again and somehow it's one of the better evenings of your week. But I also learned the hard way that fun and safe aren't automatically the same thing.

The first time I actually got nervous was a trek meetup I joined off one of these pages. Twenty something people said they were coming turned out to be four of us at the base point at 5am one guy I'd never spoken to before driving us all up a ghat road I didn't know in his car I'd never seen before. Nothing bad happened. But sitting in that car I remember thinking nobody outside this group actually knows where I am right now. That's the moment it clicked for me that convenience had quietly replaced caution somewhere along the way.

Now I do a few things differently and honestly they take like five minutes so there's no excuse not to. I always tell at least one person outside the group where I'm going who I'm meeting and roughly what time I expect to be back. Doesn't need to be dramatic just a text to a friend saying heading to this meetup here's the location back by this time. I check if the page or the organiser has any actual history posts from before real comments real faces showing up in photos not just a fresh page that popped up two weeks ago with stock bonfire pictures. I meet in public for the first interaction always. No exceptions even if the group seems chill in the chat. A crowded cafe or a known ground somewhere with people around beats someone's personal setup every single time no matter how good natured they sound in the group chat.

I've also started paying attention to pressure. If someone's pushing hard to move the meetup to a private location early or getting weirdly specific about where I live or what time I'm usually alone that's not friendliness anymore that's a flag. Genuine people meeting genuine people don't need your address on day one. And numbers matter too. A meetup that goes from twenty confirmed to four actual people showing up isn't automatically dangerous but it changes the equation enough that I stay a little more alert than I would in an actual crowd.

None of this means I've stopped going. If anything I go more now because I've made peace with the fact that meeting strangers is just part of how you build a life in a city that isn't originally yours. Pune's full of people who moved here for college or work and are quietly looking for the same thing I was looking for which is just some version of belonging that doesn't require years of history first. I still think these pages are one of the better things about this city. I just don't walk into them the same way I used to. A little bit of awareness doesn't kill the fun of it. It just means you get to enjoy the fun part without accidentally becoming a cautionary story someone tells at the next meetup.
