Somewhere between growing up and becoming who you actually are you learn this one hard truth. Holding a grudge is basically renting out space in your head to someone who probably isn't even thinking about you anymore. And that's the wildest part. You're up at 2am replaying an argument from three years ago and they're asleep fully at peace not even a notification. That's when it clicks forgiveness was never really about them. Most people think forgiving someone means telling them it's okay. It doesn't. It's not a text back saying no worries. It's not pretending the thing didn't hurt. Real forgiveness is quieter than that. It's you deciding the weight isn't worth carrying anymore. You can forgive someone and still keep your distance. You can forgive someone and never speak to them again. Those two things aren't in conflict. People act like forgiveness and boundaries can't exist in the same sentence but they were never enemies to begin with. And second chances same story different chapter. Giving someone a second chance doesn't mean rewinding the tape and pretending season one never happened. It means you're willing to watch season two with slightly updated expectations. That's it. That's the whole deal.
We're so bad at letting go because we think holding on protects us somehow. Like if we stay angry long enough it'll retroactively make the hurt make sense. It won't. Anger doesn't rewrite history it just rents more space in the present. And the truth nobody tells you enough is that you only get one life. One. Not a beta version. Not a draft you get to fix later. This one. Right now. The one where you're currently spending your Tuesday afternoon still mad about something that happened on a Tuesday afternoon two years ago. That's the actual tragedy. Not that someone hurt you. That you let it keep hurting you on repeat for free.
Forgiving someone isn't a moral high ground thing. It's a self preservation thing. You're not doing it for them you're doing it so you can walk into a room without dragging an entire storage unit of old hurt behind you. Second chances work the same way. You're not obligated to give one. But if you choose to it should come from a place of who is this person now not who they were on their worst day. People grow weirdly slowly and unevenly and sometimes not at all. But some people actually do the work actually show up different. And if you never leave room for that you end up frozen too stuck holding the same version of someone from years ago while the rest of your life keeps moving without you in it. So forgive when you can. Not because everyone deserves it automatically. But because you deserve to stop paying rent on pain that isn't even yours to keep. One life. Spend it lighter if you can.
