Remember when AI was just that thing we used to finish assignments at 11:59 pm? Yeah, same. But have you noticed how differently people are using it now? Instead of just taking notes or explanations, many Gen Z users are turning to AI for advice, self-reflection, career guidance and even their personal venting emotional support.
If you think about it, there is a good chance you have asked AI something you would never type into Google. Maybe you wanted some help making a decision, understanding your feelings or even someone else’s feelings, figuring out what to do in a difficult situation and now even to an extent that you ask AI on how to reply to deep, difficult conversations. If you’ve done all of this, you’re far from alone. What once seemed like a simple tool is slowly becoming much more personal and the dependency on it increases day by day.
Being a young adult feels overwhelming at times and we completely get it. Between college assignments, internships, placements, family expectations and the pressure of constantly seeing your peers online do much more, it often feels like we are lacking behind and there is always something to worry about. How many times have you scrolled through social media and wondered if everyone else has their life figured out except you? Chances are, most people have felt that at some point.
This is one of the reasons why AI has become so appealing. It is available whenever you need it, whether that is in the middle of the day or 3am at night when you are drowning in your own thoughts. It listens without interrupting, responds without judging, and never makes you feel embarrassed for asking what you might think is a stupid question. Isn’t that something most of us look for when we need advice?
If we’re being honest, AI has also become an unofficial relationship advisor for a lot of people. Have you ever overthought a text message and wondered what someone really meant? Or stared at your screen for ten minutes trying to decide how to reply? Many Gen Z users turn to AI for a second opinion before hitting send, asking things like “does this sound rude?” or what should I say back?” Some people even joke that AI knows more about their life than their closest friend or even themselves. While that might be an exaggeration, it shows how personal our interactions with AI have become.
Beyond relationships, many people use AI almost like a digital journal. They type out whatever is on their mind and use the responses to organize their thoughts and understand emotions. Others ask for career guidance, study tips or help during stressful situations. It is easy why some people started calling AI a friend or even a growth partner.
But can AI really replace human advice? Personally, I do not think so. As helpful as it can be, it still cannot understand emotions and experiences the same way people do. It cannot celebrate your achievements with genuine excitement, comfort you after a bad day or create memories with you. Have you ever felt better after talking to a close friend about something that was bothering you? That kind of connection is difficult for any technology to replace.
What I find interesting though, is that most people are not choosing between AI and real friendships. Instead, they use AI as an additional source of support to reflect, explore ideas and gain clarity before talking to someone. In many ways, it has become another tool for navigating everyday life. The growing relationship between AI and Gen Z shows how much our generation values guidance, reassurance and spaces where we can express ourselves without fear of judgment. While AI should never replace real conversations and relationships, it can still be a useful companion for learning, reflecting and making sense of life’s challenges.
So, is AI becoming Gen Z’s best friend? The answer probably depends on who you ask. But one thing is certain: AI is no longer just a tool sitting in the background. It has become an everyday part of people’s lives helping them learn, grow and think. Maybe it’s not replacing our friends anytime soon, but it has definitely earned a spot in our group chat.
