350 Workers arrested at Clothing Mill in MP

 

 

 

On Tuesday, Medha Patkar, who is a social activist, along with over 350 others were arrested during a protest which was happening outside of a closed private clothing mill in Sannati, MP in the district of Khargone, said an official.

Janata Shramik Sangthan’s (a group of workers) Rajkumar Dube, said that the establishment was sold to a new group but they had refused to pay any heed to the requests to re-employ those who have been working there prior to the closure.

 

He said that workers didn’t opt for a VRS scheme which was being offered to them for the past 4 years because they wanted their jobs back. Shailendra Singh Chouhan, the Khargone Superintendent of Police, told reporters that the protest is illegal & is going on by encroaching on government property. He also that action was taken 48 hours after the notice was given to them by the tehsildar of Kasravad saying to vacate the plot.

But the SP said that, “However, they did not relent and continued their protest under (Ms) Patkar. A total of 360 protesting workers along with (Ms) Patkar were arrested. She refused to fill up a bail bond and, hence, was lodged in the Narmada Valley Development Authority guesthouse. Others have been kept in ITI Kasravad and a girl's hostel. They will be released after fulfilling bail conditions.”
