Dealing with intimidating people can truly stressful. It can be as daunting as a job interview, or public speaking. And, unless worked on, it will be there at the back of your mind as a constant worry. I’ve felt like that for years - anxious about every social encounter. But I finally decided to get to the bottom of my lack of confidence so I could actually live my life. Here are 5 simple tricks that will never let people intimidate you again –

Remember, the person you’re intimidated by is human -Your idol, or your boss - is still just a person. They have relationship struggles, obstacles, insecurities, things they’re trying to prove, fears they battle, people they’re hoping to impress, bills they have to pay, etc. They do everything you do, floss teeth at night, cry when alone, and do whatever it is that makes us completely & utterly human.

Stop trying to be them - Your self-confidence can only be seen in yourself. Not a version of you, an imitation of all the people you feel you should be, but in the real you. Do not ever raise healthy self-confidence in a false persona. Unravel the real you and you will discover your confidence. Until then, you’re right to feel intimidated trying to be someone else because imitating others = feeling intimidated. Self-confidence only asks for one thing, to be yourself.

Stand Tall - Never pretend to be someone you aren’t in order to impress. Being fake is unusually transparent –
particularly when trying to cover-up insecurity. Always opt for authenticity. Be who you are - the best version of it. Those who fail to accept that version of you weren’t meant to be in your life, no matter how special they may seem. There is beauty in self-love & acceptance. Find this space and you won’t need to pretend to be someone you’re not. When you love & accept yourself, you will stand tall, no matter who is in front of you.

Know Your Worth – Know that people who intimidate you aren’t more worthy than you. They are not better than you. They aren’t more deserving. We’re all here together, trying to find our way in this world. To do this, we should look internally, with love and gratitude. Work on changing your thoughts about your own worth. Own who you are. Own your strengths & weaknesses. Stand strong within yourself. You are worthy.

Learn to negate - Being intimidated is feeling powerless. It seems, even if you summon all of your inner strength, you’d still be the one clearing away the trash at the end of the party. There’s a simple tactic you have to learn. It’s saying No. It’s a small word, one that confident people tend to use a lot. That sounds daunting. But saying no can be like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it will become. Saying Yes is going to leave you overwhelmed, over-committed & inept. Gently but firmly declining an unwanted invitation / request will definitely put your confidence at the forefront.
