Most of the people still think that physical health is the most important aspect of living a long, healthy life. Nevertheless, your mental health is equally important, if not more important. In order to live a long and healthy life, well after your retirement years, it’s important that you have a healthy mind. If not, no matter how successful you are, or how healthy your physical body is, you won’t ever be truly happy or satisfied. Here are some things that you can do to make sure your mental health is looked after –

Sleep - Juggling your job and kids / home that you have, it can be difficult to get in enough sleep during your youth. But as we all know, it’s important that you get at least 7 hours of sleep on average. The lesser sleep you get, the more susceptible you are to having mood swings & this may even lead to depression. If you have difficulty sleeping, eventually, it will start to take its toll on your emotional well being. A lot of youngsters take pride in pulling of all nighters, but that is actually one of the unhealthiest things you can do to your body, and it leads to long term health issues. So always get enough sleep.

Eat Well - Eating well isn’t just for losing those inches you’ve been dying to lose. Eating well automatically leads to a better mental health. Believe it or not, certain vitamin deficiencies are known for affecting your moods. It is truly essential that you consume a balanced diet which includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and never drink too much of caffeine. Even if it’s legal, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t act as a stimulant.

Work Out - Your body releases stress-relieving & mood-boosting endorphins before and after you work out, which is why exercise acts as an antidote to stress, anxiety, and depression. Look for small ways to add activity to your day, even though it seems difficult to do in a lockdown. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. Working out at home isn’t the same as the outdoors or the gym, but even a little bit of it inside will change your mental health for the better. Try it out.

Open Up about your Feelings – These are some of the times mankind has witnessed in several years and it is taking a toll massively on mental health. But just knowing that you are valued by others is important for helping you think more positively and be optimistic. Moreover, showing trust can increase your emotional well-being, as you get better at finding the positive factors in others, you’ll become better at finding some within yourself.

Disconnect - This is probably the most important of all of them. When everything gets overwhelming (and it often does during such times), limit your consumption of news and social media, or even avoid it completely. It is important to switch off sometimes to rejuvenate your mind. Do not consume news updates that could make you anxious and choose to read stuff that’s practical, helpful and even optimistic. This will surely do your mental health a favour.
