How mighty ‘Team Avengers’ is helping Covid-affected families

Team Avengers, who are providing services in Gurgaon, Noida, Delhi, Gorakhpur, Jhansi among other places, aims to fill the gap created due to the pandemic, helping those in need.

A group of people called Team Avengers have come together to pool in their resources and are providing help in the form of home-cooked meals, dry ration kits, medicines, oxygen support, ambulances, verified medical leads, hospital beds and funds for the Covid-affected families.
They started a WhatsApp group on the 26th of April. ‘Team Avengers’ is an initiative of 6 friends. Abhijeet Dutta, who is the founding member of the initiative, said “We saw a lot of people breathing their last on the streets. There are many people known to us who couldn’t get medical facilities.” This urge to help others encouraged him to reach out to friends & family who then soon became a part of the group.

Mr. Dutta said, regarding the name of the group, that he kept the name ‘Team Avengers’ as, just like the movie, each Avenger has special powers & similarly, every human has a special power in them to help others.
Providing services in Gurgaon, Noida, Delhi, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, etc. ‘Team Avengers’ wants to fill in the gap made by the pandemic, helping those in need. Deepshikha Singh Khan, a founding member & volunteer for the group said, “Isolation is what Covid is bringing. Nobody is ready to help. Even the families sometimes are not able to. It is a big problem that has occurred due to the pandemic.” She added, “We can’t just send condolences. Something needed to be done to improve the situation.”

Until now, Team Avengers has distributed more than 3,000 meals and a several ration kits to covid patients & the ones outside the hospitals, slums, railway stations, bus stops & on streets of Delhi NCR. Another challenge that the team faced was the overwhelming demand. Mr. Dutta said, “We felt helpless. We were unable to provide the medical facilities for severe cases. We were unable to find ICU beds or oxygen cylinders.” However the network gradually grew, solutions streamed in. Team Avengers realised that even one verified number, one available ICU bed, one oxygen cylinder; one available ambulance can make a difference to someone, as that is enough to save a life.

In the time period of less than one month, they’ve grown from 5 to 55 volunteers. These include doctors, medical researchers, life coaches & social workers from America, Germany and India. They are giving consultation online to covid patients & families, on how to fight the virus, tackle post-covid trauma and depression due to isolation. Amidst the dread that has come with the second wave, it is the positive stories of people winning the fight against this virus that’s keeping the volunteers going.
