Morning fatigue is normal for many. While it is important to focus on underlying causes to ensure good quality sleep, there may be other ways to energize the body & help you feel more awake & energized in the mornings.

So here are a few simple tricks you can incorporate in your life to make your mornings better!

No Electronics Before Bed – This one is obvious and nothing we haven’t heard of before. We’re creatures of habit, and technology surrounds us. This results in most of us using some electronic device at work/school, be it a computer or a smartphone. The real trouble with this comes at the end of the day. This is when our bodies should react to a change in light levels & release sleep-signalling chemicals to help us sleep. But when you bring your smartphone/laptop to bed, you're giving your eyes a big amount of blue light.

The effect of this varies from person to person, but it certainly doesn't contribute to better sleep. One more thing to watch out for is watching TV late in the evening. In any case, if you're having trouble dozing off, try to eliminate as much artificial light as possible thirty minutes to an hour before bedtime.

Put Away your Clock – Sometimes, simply hiding your clock from view can help you fall asleep faster. Anxiety, which leads to insomnia and counting down the amount of time you have left before your morning alarm goes off, doesn't help in the least. In fact, it can make you even more nervous and be the little distraction that helps keep you awake.

Stretch – Right after waking up, this is one of the best things you can do. Performing simple stretches helps warm up muscles & promote circulation in the body, which helps wake up in the morning. Many stretch instinctively, such as moving their arms over their head or extending their legs in the bed. A person who takes as little as five minutes to stretch or perform some simple yoga poses may help awaken their muscles & the overall body. A smaller and healthier breakfast may help you to start your day quicker & sustain energy levels. You could try porridge, cereals, eggs, fruits, vegetables & oats.

Give Yourself Enough Time to Unwind - You can’t expect your body to go from active to sleep mode in a matter of minutes or seconds, Dr Philip Gehrman, the assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, says “Most people need a good hour of winding-down time before they’re just physically and mentally ready to go to bed.”

Eat a Light Breakfast - While breakfast is important to energize the body and many people believe it to be the most important meal of the day, it may have the opposite effect if one eats it in larger quantities. People who consume a big breakfast may notice they’ll feel more sluggish as the body digests their meal. These people may also rely on caffeine to give them energy.

These were some simple ways to not only feel well-rested but also refreshed in the morning right after you wake up.
