There are many wonderful benefits of meditation. This practice, for instance, can help ground you and bring you back to the present moment when you’re feeling overwhelmed, allowing you to regain your focus. Whether you’re a beginner or are looking to make your practice deeper, developing effective meditation skills requires time, as well as establishing some basic mindfulness skills. So here are a few tips that may help you with bettering your meditation practice -

Do not fret if your mind wanders – People tend to get really frustrated/angry when they can’t completely concentrate on the meditation. However, you should know that it’s totally normal for your mind to wander. Just notice when your mind starts wandering and try to re-focus on the meditation the best you can - no need to get irritated and angry. If anything, when you notice your mind wandering often, you should feel proud of yourself for sticking with your meditation even when it wasn’t easy and you felt distracted!

Make a sanctuary for your meditation at home - Walk around your house until you find a space that is fairly quiet & makes you feel relaxed. Remove the clutter from that area and wipe it clean. Set yourself up with meditation tools and aids and make it a comfortable enough space for you. Turn off the light or close the curtains to create a right cosy atmosphere for your practice.

Pick a Style that Works for You - There are thousands of different types & styles of meditations and you will not resonate with or enjoy doing all of them. Some will be easier and more effective for you than others, while some, you will struggle with and may not produce the best results. The solution to this is to find the one that works for you, and sticking to it. This will help a lot, and make the meditation better and more enjoyable for you.

Make Use of Guided Meditations – There’s several wonderful guided meditations out there, from YouTube videos to podcasts right down to meditation apps. These are easy and they guide you every step of the way throughout the meditation. These are perfect for the ones who are just starting out with meditation or who are intimidated by them and don’t know where to start. They help a lot and make the process of meditation a whole lot easier.

Pick a Time Slot that Works for You - Struggling to stay awake during meditations before bed at night? Try meditating in the mornings or afternoons. Do you feel super rushed before work each day and the thought of meditating is making you feel overwhelmed? Go for a meditation when you get home at the end of the day. Choose a time of day that is actually working for you, but keep in mind to not feel the need to do what someone else is, if it’s not suiting your lifestyle!

A few other small tips to better your meditation would be to not take it too seriously. Always keep a faint smile on your lips while meditating. Using meditation music also helps immensely.
