Hockey World will miss you a lot mr. Balbir Singh

Another day, another tragic incident. 2020 has been one gruesome year. In the first 5 months itself, there have been some devastating events. Starting with the Amazon forest fire, 2020 has simply steamrolled past our world and made us fall back on our toes. On 25th May 2020, the hockey world lost one of it's brightest gems. Balbir Singh Sr. left for heavenly abode at the age of 96 leaving behind three sons and one daughter.

Arguably the greatest center-forward to ever don India's jersey, three-time Olympic gold medalist Balbir Singh was a wizard by all means.

He was the first hockey player to have been awarded India's fourth-highest civilian award, Padma Shri in 1957. His autobiography "The Golden Hattrick: My Hockey Days was published in 1977.


Balbir Singh crushed Holland in the 1952 Olympic finals by scoring 5 goals as India won the finals 6-1. This is also the record for the highest individual goals scored in the final of the Olympics. The talismanic goal scorer was the chief architect of the three continuous Olympic wins of India, post-independence from 1948 to 1956.
