Sarojini Naidu was born on 13 February 1879 in Hyderabad. She is known as the “Nightingale of India” or “Bharatiya Kokila” because of her major contribution to the field of poetry. She played a very crucial role in India’s freedom struggle and also promoted women’s rights. She was a politician and a great poet. A hobby that she kept throughout her life was writing, she wrote many plays and poetry from a very young age. She was the first woman who became the governor of India. She was elected as the president of the Indian National Congress Party in 1925, the first woman to get that position.
 
Sarojini Naidu began writing at the age of 12. ‘Maher Muneer’ a play written in the Persian language by her, impressed the Nizam of the Kingdom of Hyderabad.
 
Some of her classic literary works are - “The Golden Threshold” (1905), “The Bird of Time: Songs of Life, Death, and The Spring”(1912), “Speeches and Writing of Sarojini Naidu”, “The Indian Weavers”(1971).
She died due to cardiac arrest on 2nd March 1949 in Lucknow at the Government house.
